On your initial visit with one of our ENT specialists, we will determine whether allergy testing is appropriate for you. If you have had testing at another physicians' office, please bring a copy with you to your appointment. Patients who suffer significant allergy symptoms and who have had little or no improvement on appropriate medications will benefit from allergy testing. Skin testing is the most direct way to test for allergies to particulates such as pollen, dust, animal dander, and mold spores.
Prior to Skin Testing
Certain medications prevent safe and accurate skin testing. Be sure your doctor has an accurate list of your current medications--including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements. Antihistamines must be stopped 5 days prior to testing.
Day of Testing
Your visit will last about 1 hour. You should wear comfortable clothes with a loose fitting short sleeve shirt. You can eat regular meals on the day of your testing. It is important to notify your doctor of any recent changes in symptoms--especially any flare-up of respiratory symptoms that might increase risks during testing. Skin testing is performed on the forearm or back with a series of small skin pricks.
How We Use The Results
We are able to see the results of the testing immediately. We will then make appropriate recommendations for treatment based on these results. If you test positive for allergies then you may be a good candidate for sublingual drops or allergy shots.
