Injectable treatments provide an easy means for facial rejuvenation with low risks of complications and very little down time. There are two classes of injectable treatments: botulinum toxin (BOTOX CosmeticTM/DysportTM) and fillers (RestylaneTM/PerlaneTM/JuvedermTM/RadiesseTM).
Botulinum toxin is a purified protein that causes relaxation of skeletal muscles. When the medication is injected into facial skeletal muscles, the relaxation of the muscles causes smoothing of the overlying skin to eliminate or improve wrinkles. Every year, thousands of these procedures are performed in the United States and throughout the world. BOTOX CosmeticTM and DysportTM are the two products on the U.S. market that are FDA-approved for treatment in the glabellar region (the area of the central forehead just between the eyebrows). The forehead and "crows feet" regions are also widely treated with these products. The effects last around 3 months and can be repeated after that time.
Facial fillers are also very popular and easy treatments for facial rejuvenation. A very important part of the aging process in the face is attributable to loss of soft tissue volume. These fillers provide a means of restoring that volume in a short office-based minimally-invasive procedure with little down time for recovery. The above mentioned fillers are FDA-approved in the U.S. for treatment of nasolabial folds (smile lines) around the mouth. They are also widely used to restore volume in the infraorbital tear troughs, cheeks, and lips.
If you are considering facial rejuvenation procedures, these minimally-invasive injectable treatments may be just what you need. However, you want to be sure that the injections are performed by someone who is qualified. In many offices and med spa environments, the procedures are performed by an aesthetician or nurse who may have relatively little training in facial anatomy. Dr. Thomason personally evaluates every patient and performs every injection himself, so you can be sure that you are in the hands of an expert.
